If you've been researching your dog's cancer for a while then you've probably noticed canine cancer is getting out-of-hand. Within their own communities, vets have been concerned for a while. Here's why..

5 alarming statistics:

1. Our dogs are 2 times more likely to develop leukemia than humans.
2. 4 times more likely to suffer from breast cancer than humans.
3. 8 times more likely to develop bone cancer than humans.
4. An incredible 35 times more at risk for developing skin cancer than humans.
5. Cancer is the leading cause of non-accidental death in dogs

• 35,000,000 (35 million) of the dogs alive in the US today already have or will develop cancer.

Which means..

• Every dog has a greater than 1 in 2 chance of developing cancer.

For younger vets, treating dog's with cancer is an every day thing but older vets know it wasn't always like that... a few decades ago much fewer dogs developed cancer.

This raises the obvious question... "Why?"

"Why?"

On all frontiers of science we are accelerating forward, so then why are our dogs more at risk?

Well, it doesn't take too much detective work to discover the reason why, let me explain..

Consider the 5 basic needs of dogs, which without they cannot survive:

1. Water - the quality of water is better than it was a few decades ago
2. Shelter - houses are warmer in winter, cooler in summer
3. Love and companionship - we still love our dogs like maniacs
4. Exercise - walking the dog is still a favorite past-time of dog owners
5. Nourishment - food is.... wait, this one has changed

"How The Way We Nourish Our
Dogs is Leading to Cancer"

Bear with me a bit more because its important to understand all this before we get to the strategies you can use to help your dog with cancer.

30 years ago, dogs were more likely fed table scraps and other home prepared food...

...and although the dog food industry spends millions a day to convince you otherwise, the result was healthier dogs.

However, over several decades the dog food industry has cleverly (and deceitfully) manipulated us into believing food from a tin or bag is healthier than home prepared.

The dog food industry's propoganda campaign has been so thorough and wide-reaching, it has involved providing "lecturers" (I just did air-quotes when I said that) to teach nutrition to vet students.. (more the norm than the exception)

....and even providing these students with free product to encourage them to recommend the dog food brand to owners when they begin practicing.

Given the ever-increasing demands on our time, the convenience of feeding an "instant" diet that we're promised day-and-night has everything your dog needs, has won over and we've unfortunately adopted the habit of feeding of feeding a member of our family instant, processed food as its main staple.

Its appalling, but you're not to blame... the dog food industry has not done right by you.

I won't get into it here but if you've visited any of my other sites then you probably know commercial dog food is laden with chemicals banned from human food because of their toxicity and correlations with cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, auto-immune disease, epilepsy, liver malfunction... the list goes one.

If you doubt any of this I can understand because the pet food industry does some of the best marketing in the world... nearly every dog owner is under the same spell.

Phase 1

"The first phase is the preclinical "silent" phase where the patient is not exhibiting any clinical signs of disease, yet there is evidence of biochemical changes. All of these alterations are of impending clinical importance"

So even if your dog is still looking healthy, the first phase of malnutrition has begun. This is the best time to start cancer-specific nutritional therapy.

Phase 2

"The second phase is the clinical phase where the patient begins to exhibit weight loss, anorexia, lethargy and early evidence of weight loss. These patients are more likely to exhibit side effects associated with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immune modulation, and surgery"

If your dog is showing any signs of weight loss, then he is already in the 2nd phase of malnutrition and is going to be made sicker by treatment side-effects than a dog that has already started a cancer-specific diet.

Phase 3

"The third and final phase of cancer cachexia is associated with marked debilitation, weakness. These patients literally waste away due to the physical effects of the malignancy and the resulting cancer-induced alterations in metabolism."

You never want to let your dog get to phase 3 because it is difficult to 'turn-the-tide'. A cancer diet needs to be in place as early as possible to prevent your dog from ever reaching phase 3.

This is Professor Olgilvie's recommendation for cancer dog owners like you: "Nutritional Intervention MUST Begin Early & MUST Be Followed Through Aggressively to Gain Maximum Benefit" "There is little question that nutritional intervention must begin early and must be followed through aggressively to gain maximum benefit.... ....long before the patient exhibits evidence of weight loss, debilitation, or anorexia begin which can in turn enhance response to therapy and improve quality of life."
